Special requirements

• Sand Substrate

  Essential for benthophagous 'earth-eating' behavior. Gravel can damage sensitive gill filaments or cause internal blockages.

• Maternal Mouthbrooding

  An ovophilous maternal mouthbrooder. The female carries eggs/fry in her mouth for protection, forming only weak pair bonds during spawning.

• Pristine Water Quality

  Highly susceptible to deteriorating water and HLLE. Requires mature biological filtration and massive (50-70%) weekly water changes.
