Special requirements
Open Swimming Space
Unlike most mbuna that stick to the rocks, Acei are open-water swimmers and inhabit the upper half of the aquarium. High rockwork is recommended, but swimming room is essential.
Algae-Based Diet
Requires a high proportion of vegetable matter (Spirulina, nori). Avoid high-protein red meats like beefheart, which cause fatal digestive issues (Malawi Bloat).
Bogwood Addition
Unique among mbuna, they naturally graze algae off submerged wood. Adding bogwood is encouraged if the water remains well-buffered (alkaline).
Harem Breeding
Maternal mouthbrooder. Best spawned in a harem (1 male to 3+ females) to dissipate the male's vigorous courtship aggression.
