Special requirements

• Fine Sand Substrate

  Essential for benthophagous sifting. Coarse gravel can damage gill filaments or cause internal blockages if ingested during feeding.

• Blackwater Conditions

  Native to acidic, low-mineral environments. Requires soft water and is highly sensitive to parameter swings and deteriorating water quality.

• High-Efficiency Filtration

  Requires massive weekly water changes (50-70%) and over-filtration to prevent HLLE (Hole-in-the-head) and stunted growth.

• Larvophilous Mouthbrooding

  Unique reproductive strategy where eggs are laid on a substrate but fry are immediately taken into the parents' mouths upon hatching for protection.
