Special requirements

  • Hard, Alkaline Water

Requires strictly hard, alkaline water mimicking Lake Tanganyika (pH 8.0-9.0). Highly susceptible to deteriorating conditions and must never be added to an immature tank.

  • Massive Aquarium & Rockwork

Requires a massive aquarium (864+ liters) with a sandy substrate and large, secure cave structures to accommodate the adult alpha males and provide refuges.

  • Dietary Restrictions

Never feed mammalian or avian meats (like beef heart) or feeder fish, as this causes organ degeneration. Provide high-quality meaty foods supplemented with vegetable matter like spirulina.

  • Careful Tankmate Selection

While relatively docile for a large cichlid, it is a generalized predator that will consume much smaller fishes. Keep only with appropriately sized Tanganyikan tankmates.
