Special requirements

• Substrate Preference

  Requires a dark, soft-bottom substrate (sand or fine gravel) to mimic its natural environment and protect delicate barbels from abrasion.

• Swimming Space

  Needs significant open swimming space along the bottom of the aquarium, complemented by sparse planting to allow for active foraging.

• Social Schooling

  Thrives best when kept in a group of six or more; single specimens or small pairs may become shy and stressed.

• Unique Spawning Habits

  During breeding, the female carries fertilized eggs in a pouch under her ventral fins before attaching them to leaves or smooth surfaces.
