Special requirements

• Sand Substrate

  Essential for benthophagous 'earth-eating' behavior. Sifting substrate through gills is a natural feeding requirement; gravel can cause physical injury or blockages.

• Strict Water Quality

  Extremely susceptible to deteriorating water quality and HLLE. Requires over-filtration and massive (50-70%) weekly water changes.

• Intraspecific Aggression

  Markedly more aggressive than most other Geophagus species. Must be kept in groups of 5-8 in large aquaria to spread out territorial antagonism.

• Substrate Spawning

  Unlike most congeners that mouthbrood, this species lays eggs in a large excavated pit on a solid surface; both parents defend the site aggressively.
