Special requirements

• Extreme Aggression Management

  A highly belligerent and territorial species. Males often kill females if not properly introduced; use of tank dividers is often mandatory even for 'bonded' pairs.

• High-Efficiency Filtration

  A messy feeder that produces a significant amount of waste. Requires over-filtration and frequent maintenance to manage the bioload.

• Secure Hardscape

  Enjoys vigorous digging. Rocks must be placed directly on the glass bottom to prevent the fish from undermining them and causing tank failure.

• Dietary Fiber

  Requires a significant proportion of vegetable matter. High-protein red meats like beefheart must be avoided as they damage the digestive system.
