• Algal/Plant Supplementation

  Natural foragers that consume algae and organic detritus. Captive diet must include high-quality plant or algal-based flakes/granules alongside meaty foods.

• Biparental Substrate Spawning

  Forms stable pair bonds. Both parents participate in selecting a site and guarding the brood, which is typically laid on flat surfaces.

• Visual Identification

  Distinguished by a dark spot in the middle of the dorsal fin and conspicuous red cheeks, opercula, and bellies in breeding pairs.
