Special requirements

• Polygamous Harem Setup

  Males are aggressively territorial. Maintain a ratio of one male to three or more females to disperse aggression and prevent excessive stress on individual females.

• Fine Sand Substrate

  Essential for benthophagous sifting. Gravel can damage gill filaments or be ingested, leading to internal blockages.

• Maternal Mouthbrooding

  An ovophilous mouthbrooder. The female collects eggs immediately after they are laid, and the male fertilizes them directly in front of her mouth.

• Stringent Water Maintenance

  Highly susceptible to deteriorating water quality. Requires minimum weekly water changes of 40-70% and mechanical filtration to trap sand particles.
