Special requirements
Extreme Aggression Management
Known as one of the most aggressive cichlids. Often best kept as a single specimen. For pairs, a tank divider must be kept ready as males can turn lethal toward females instantly.
Equipment Protection
This species will physically attack heaters and filter pipes. All equipment should be shielded behind heavy rocks or fitted with high-strength guards.
High-Volume Filtration
A very messy feeder that produces massive waste. Requires over-sized filtration and substantial weekly water changes to maintain high dissolved oxygen levels.
Secure Hardscape
Aggressive diggers and 'redecorators.' Heavy rocks and driftwood must be placed directly on the tank base to prevent the fish from undermining them.
