Special requirements
High Temperature Stability
Requires warmer water than most tropical fish (27–30°C). Tankmates must be selected specifically for their ability to thrive in these higher temperatures.
Soft Sandy Substrate
Essential for natural sifting behavior. Sifting sand is considered a basic hygiene requirement for this species; gravel should be avoided.
Biological Maturity
Extremely sensitive to poor water quality. Should never be added to new or immature aquaria. Susceptible to Hole-in-the-head disease if conditions deteriorate.
Reproductive Hygiene
Eggs are prone to fungus and failure unless water is pristine and has low hardness. Inexperienced or commercially-bred pairs often consume their own broods.
