Special requirements
Rocky Biotope
Requires a Lake Tanganyika setup with extensive rock piles forming caves. Piles should fill much of the aquarium to provide sufficient territory.
Hard Alkaline Water
Must be kept in high pH (8.0-9.0) and hard water. While they are hardy, they thrive and breed best in Rift Lake parameters.
Cooperative Breeding
Unique altruistic behavior where older siblings help parents guard the newest generation of fry. This can lead to a 'colony' tank with multiple generations.
Extreme Territoriality
Highly aggressive when guarding fry. Often best kept in a species-only tank, as they can harass or kill larger tankmates like algae eaters or catfish.
