Special requirements

• Strict Blackwater Parameters

  Native to extreme blackwater habitats. Requires very soft, acidic water (pH as low as 4.0-5.0) to thrive, particularly for wild-caught specimens.

• Dense Cover & Shade

  Used to a dense rainforest canopy with minimal light penetration. Requires dim lighting, floating plants, and heavy leaf litter/driftwood to feel secure.

• Aggressive Brood Care

  Females are highly protective of eggs and fry. In smaller quarters, they may become hyper-aggressive toward the male, necessitating a divider or a larger tank.

• Low Organic Waste

  Extremely sensitive to fluctuating water chemistry. Requires consistent, small weekly water changes (10-15%) and must only be added to a biologically mature aquarium.
