Special requirements

• Equipment Protection

  Known to physically break internal equipment. Submersible heaters should be fitted with guards or, ideally, situated externally in a sump or inline.

• Massive Waste Management

  Exceedingly messy feeders. Requires oversized filtration and a strict 30-50% weekly water change schedule to prevent Nitrate buildup.

• Interactive/Destructive Decor

  Will actively dig and 'redecorate' the aquarium. Rooted plants will be destroyed. Use heavy driftwood or rocks that cannot be easily shifted.

• Hunting Behavior (Thanatosis)

  Some wild populations use 'death-feigning' strategies to lure prey. In captivity, they are highly intelligent and will 'beg' for food from their owners.
