A soft, sandy substrate is essential as this species is benthophagous, sifting through the substrate for food. Coarse materials can inhibit natural behavior and cause injury.
Pristine Water Quality
Highly susceptible to deteriorating water quality and Head and Lateral Line Erosion (HLLE). Requires a mature, over-filtered aquarium with massive 50-70% weekly water changes.
Social Grouping
Biotodoma species are gregarious and must be kept in groups of 5-8. Smaller numbers can lead to excessive bullying or a failure of the group to settle.
