Special requirements

• Equipment Armor

  Will actively attack heaters and filter pipes. Use heavy-duty heater guards and conceal equipment behind immovable rocks to prevent breakage.

• Massive Waste Management

  Extremely greedy and messy. Requires oversized, high-efficiency filtration and substantial weekly water changes to maintain oxygen levels and water quality.

• Visual Barrier Scaping

  If kept in a large community, provide heavy driftwood and rocks to create visual breaks, as they are among the most belligerent cichlids known.

• Nuchal Hump Care

  Males develop a large, permanent nuchal hump in captivity. Diet should include carotene-rich foods (like unpeeled prawns) to maintain vibrant orange/yellow coloration.
