Special requirements
Tannin-Rich Environment
Benefits greatly from leaf litter (Beech, Oak, or Ketapang) which releases beneficial tannins and supports microbe colonies as a secondary food source for fry.
Cave Spawning Sites
A secretive substrate spawner requiring small crevices, flowerpots, or caves. The female becomes hyper-aggressive when guarding the brood.
Soft Water Preference
While captive-bred strains are more adaptable, they prefer soft, slightly acidic water. High organic waste should be avoided with consistent 10-15% weekly water changes.
Dither Fish Utility
Being naturally shy, they feel more secure in the presence of small, peaceful schooling fishes like Pencilfish (Nannostomus spp.).
