Special requirements

• Shyness Management

  Naturally timid; requires 'dither fish' (peaceful schooling tetras) to feel secure. In danger, they darken their color pattern significantly and hide.

• Non-Destructive Nature

  Unlike many cichlids, this species does not dig, making it excellent for well-maintained planted aquaria.

• Pristine Water Quality

  Susceptible to Head and Lateral Line Erosion (HLLE) if water quality is poor. Requires low flow and consistent maintenance.

• Monogamous Substrate Spawning

  Biparental spawners that lay eggs on flat rocks or leaves. Both parents participate in guarding up to 300 eggs and subsequent fry.
