Special requirements

• Dental Maintenance

  Requires a diet of hard-shelled crustaceans (snails, krill, mollusks) to naturally wear down their continuously growing teeth.

• Brackish Environment

  While often sold in freshwater, they require a brackish environment for long-term health and successful spawning.

• Intraspecific Aggression

  Known to be aggressive toward members of its own species; housing multiple puffers requires a large, heavily decorated tank to break lines of sight.

• Paternal Care

  The male guards and protects fertilized eggs on the substrate for approximately 7 days until the fry hatch.
