Special requirements

• Fine Sand Substrate

  Essential for natural benthophagous sifting. Gravel can damage gills or cause internal blockages if ingested.

• Pristine Water Stability

  Highly susceptible to Nitrate buildup and parameter swings. Requires 50-70% weekly water changes to prevent HLLE (Hole-in-the-head).

• Mechanical Filtration Shielding

  Constant sand sifting can wear out filter impellers; pre-filters or specific intake positioning is necessary to trap stirred-up particles.

• Ovophilous Mouthbrooding

  Spawns on a substrate, but the female (and occasionally the male) takes the eggs into her mouth immediately after fertilization.
