Special requirements
Soft Sandy Substrate
Essential for 'eartheating' behavior. Coarse gravel can damage gill filaments during sifting and lead to internal blockages if ingested.
Pristine Water Stability
Highly susceptible to Nitrate buildup and swings in parameters. Requires massive weekly water changes (50-70%) to prevent Head and Lateral Line Erosion (HLLE).
Fine-Grade Diet
Stomach studies show they cannot ingest large items. Must be offered high-quality, fine-grade sinking foods and small live/frozen invertebrates (Artemia/Bloodworm).
Maternal Mouthbrooding
An ovophilous mouthbrooder. The female collects eggs immediately after fertilization and holds them for the duration of the incubation period.
