Special requirements

• Sand Substrate

  Essential for benthophagous behavior. They sift sand through their gills; gravel can cause injury or blockages.

• Pristine Water Quality

  Highly susceptible to deteriorating water quality and HLLE. Requires a mature aquarium with massive (50-70%) weekly water changes.

• Social Structure

  Must be kept in a group of 5-8 to prevent bullying and ensure the group feels secure. They form a clear dominance hierarchy.

• Spawning Surface

  Require a solid surface (rock or wood) to attach eggs via adhesive filaments. Often dig to 'uncover' buried rocks for this purpose.
