Special requirements

• Hard Alkaline Water

  Requires strictly hard, alkaline water mimicking Lake Tanganyika (pH 8.0-9.0). High water quality is mandatory, necessitating weekly water changes of up to 50%.

• Complex Rockwork

  Requires a habitat dominated by complex rock piles and caves placed directly on the tank base to prevent toppling during digging. Distinct rock piles help define territories.

• Dietary Variety

  Naturally preys on invertebrates and sponges using specialized fleshy lips. Provide a mix of high-quality dry foods with vegetable content alongside live/frozen meaty foods like Mysis and Artemia.

• Hybridization Risk

  Must not be housed with other Chalinochromis species as they will readily hybridize. Avoid Julidochromis species to prevent intense territorial conflict.
