Special requirements

  • Disease Susceptibility

The Blue Tang is highly susceptible to Ich, skin parasites, lateral line disease, and fin erosion. It requires high water quality and a diet rich in marine-base vegetables to maintain its immune system.

  • Swimming Space Requirements

This is an active fish that loves to swim and requires an aquarium at least 6 feet in length to provide ample room to roam.

  • Herbivorous Dietary Supplementation

Must be offered plenty of marine-based seaweed and algae (dried seaweed or veggie clips) at least three times per week to reduce aggression and improve health.

  • Conspecific Aggression

Generally peaceful toward most tankmates but will become aggressive toward other fish of its own species. Multiple specimens should only be introduced simultaneously into a large marine system.

  • Venomous Spines

The species possesses an anterolateral glandular groove with a venom gland.
