Special requirements

• Deep Sand Bed

  Requires a substrate layer of at least 3 inches in depth, consisting of fine to moderately sized sand, to support its natural burrowing behavior.

• Tight-Fitting Canopy

  A secure, tight-fitting lid is essential to prevent the fish from jumping out of the aquarium, a common behavior for this species.

• High Feeding Frequency

  Due to its metabolism and activity, it should be fed a variety of meaty marine foods at least three times per day.

• Conspecific Territoriality

  Highly territorial toward its own kind; should be housed singly unless kept as a confirmed mated pair in a sufficiently large system.

• Burrow Maintenance

  Exhibits unique behavior of covering its burrow entrance at dusk and rebuilding the opening each morning.
