Special requirements

• Facultative Mouthbrooding

  Unique reproductive strategy where parents may mouthbrood larvae or use substrate pits. Strategy is influenced by water flow, substrate type, and the presence of tankmates.

• Strict Water Chemistry

  Requires acidic conditions with negligible carbonate hardness. An RO unit is typically necessary to maintain the very low pH and hardness required for health and breeding.

• Fine Sand Substrate

  Essential for natural behavior, including the construction of sand piles during courtship and the successful execution of mouthbrooding.
