Special requirements

• Facultative Mouthbrooding

  One of only two Apistogramma species known to mouthbrood. The strategy is highly plastic and influenced by tankmates, substrate (fine sand vs. gravel), and water flow.

• Pristine Blackwater Conditions

  Requires very soft, acidic water (pH 4.0-6.0). Weekly water changes of 20-30% are mandatory to maintain the high water quality this species demands.

• Sand Substrate

  Essential for natural behavior. Adults often only pick up eggs/larvae for mouthbrooding over fine sand; they may ignore them or delay care over gravel.
