Special requirements

• Barbel Protection

  Requires a smooth sand or fine gravel substrate; rough or sharp edges can cause permanent damage and infections to their sensitive barbels.

• Shaded Retreats

  As they prefer relief from bright aquarium lighting, the tank should be well-planted and include caves or driftwood to provide shaded areas.

• Social Schooling

  Essential to keep in groups of six or more to prevent stress and encourage active, natural foraging behavior.

• Water Chemistry Stability

  Prefers soft, slightly acidic water conditions typical of its native Peruvian river tributaries.
